From Leigh Moss, Head of School

This time of year is always about staying well, but the beginning to 2018 has proved particularly challenging.  At ADS, we've seen cases of the flu, strep, and recently a stomach bug.  To put things in perspective, at the end of each month when we send out attendance notifications to parents of students who have missed 3 or more days of school, and THIS month our absences soared to 2.5 times what our average has been all year.

Many more students than usual have been sent home with symptoms, and as a school, we are erring on the side of caution as not to further spread illness.  Students are washing hands, teachers have extra anti-bacterial/anti-viral wipes, and our school is cleaned nightly by our janitorial staff.

Students, staff and families have all been affected.  To help curb absences and to keep our community well we need to all do our part:
  • Make sure your child is fever free for 24 hours BEFORE sending them back to school,
  • Notify your child's teachers and the front office staff if your child has a confirmed case of flu or other illness,
  • Encourage your child to use tissues and cover their mouths with their arm when they cough.  (Every classroom has plenty of tissues.)
Many of you have asked about volunteering to help deep clean buildings or classrooms.  If you wish to do so, please feel free to reach out your child's classroom's room parent to coordinate a time with teachers that will work best.  Although we are working to do our best to keep the school clean and sanitized daily, your support is also greatly appreciated.  Stay well, ADS!

100th Day of School!

Friday, Feb 2 will mark our 100th day of school  If you have a student in one of the lower grades, you may already know this because several K-2 classrooms celebrate the Day of 100.

This year ADS launched our first 100 Partners in 100 Days campaign and tomorrow is our last day to push towards our goal of 100 new partners.  We're close to reaching 60% of our goal.  If you haven't set up a monthly donation already to support our beloved school, it's EASY.  Just click the link below, indicate how much you'd like to donate monthly (no amount is too small because we're all in this together!) and then check the box to 'make this a monthly donation'.  Next week, I'll report out on how close we came to our goal of 100 Partners in 100 Days and this will help set our goal for next year!  A huge Thank You to everyone who has already taken part in supporting ADS through this fundraising event.
Set Up My Monthly Donation to ADS

Hello ADS families,

My name is Nisa Almaraz, and I am SO happy to announce my return to the ADS community!!!  I will be teaching K-2 PE for the remainder of the year.  I've been a part of this school for the past 6 years, teaching grades K-4, and I'm excited to be back and to see what new experiences this position has to offer.  Although this is my first time teaching physical education, my passion to involve whole body learning has always been a part of my philosophy as an educator.  In order to meet my students' needs, attention to all areas are essential: social, physical, and emotional.  I look forward to growing as an educator while working alongside Jessica in order to provide a high quality curriculum that values all children as individual learners.
ADS Workday and Stage Installation Scheduled

On Saturday, Feb 24th from 9-12, ADS will host a volunteer workday.  Last year the Middle School secured a grant to build a small stage in the outdoor center courtyard.  The stage has been designed, supplies ordered, and materials are on their way!  If you have experience with building, please consider coming to help!  Contact Taylor Young attyoung@austindiscoveryschool.org if you'd like to participate!

On the same day, Leigh Moss, Head of School, will be hosting tutorials for the upcoming Amplify Austin Fundraiser platform.  This is a great way for those who are active on Social Media to set their own goal to help raise funds for Amplify Austin Day (6pm on March 1 - 6pm on March 2)  If you're interested in learning how to set up a page and are willing to teach others how, please consider coming out to learn how during the workday on Feb. 24 from 9-12.
