Hi there! My name is Meg Burkly, and I am so thrilled to be joining the Austin Discovery School family! I was born and raised near Boston, MA. I'm a certified early childhood through 6th grade teacher. I attended The University of Texas at Austin for undergrad, and I am currently getting a Master of Arts in Mathematical Teaching and Leadership through Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. My hope is to deepen my own understanding of mathematics, so that I can share this knowledge with my students and fellow teachers.
While walking 15 miles per day on the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) in Spain with my dad, I realized I wanted to be an educator. We had set out in the dark one morning, walking West across Spain. As the sky began to lighten behind us and darkness was still ahead, my dad asked me what I really wanted to do with my life. Later that day, after walking on the dirt path and simultaneously contemplating my dad’s question for hours on end, the sun was high in the sky. It was then that I told him I needed to do something that was truly meaningful every day. I wanted to be a teacher. At night in the crowded hostels filled with pilgrims just like myself, I rested my feet and used the spotty wifi to research alternative teaching certificate programs in Texas that I could start right away. Upon returning to Texas, I was accepted into a program and quickly transitioned out of the corporate world where I had been working as a Project Management Supervisor. I feel grateful everyday for the opportunity to teach children. My intention is to create a place for children where they can feel safe, build trust and learn.
When I'm not teaching or studying these days, you can find me hiking with my dogs (Aspen and Franklin) around Austin, practicing yoga, reading a book or cooking/eating yummy, (mostly) vegan food!
