About Me

Hello!  My name is Sherin Janey, and I am super excited to be teaching 1st/2nd grade ELA/Social Studies this year.  I moved to Austin in 2010 from Okinawa, Japan, where I taught Special Education students from military families for three years.  Originally, I am from Berlin, Germany, where I lived until I was 19.  However, I spent some intermittent years in Washington State and Missouri, where I learned English.  At 14, I became a naturalized citizen and shortly after my 19th birthday, I made America my permanent home.  Though I may now have my roots  growing in Austin, I treasure traveling and have had the opportunity to backpack through most of Europe, the US, and some parts of Asia.

I graduated from New Mexico State University with a BA in English, and 2 years later attained my Masters in English Literature.  While there, I taught Writing and Literature for 3 three years, and then moved on to Okinawa to teach for DoDDS (Department of Defense Schools).  Once arriving back state side from Japan, I taught Special Education at the Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) for a year, and then moved into a substitute role for K-12 in the Del Valle school district while searching for a full time teaching position.  During this search, my husband and I discovered we were adding one more munchkin to our clan, who led us to ADS.

Luckily, I had the opportunity of being a stay-at-home mama for 6 years.  At the end of that adventure, many hours of research later introduced us to the best place for our son: ADS.  Their philosophy on teaching the whole child and concentration on their social and emotional development jived perfectly with ours.  After substituting at ADS for a year, I fell in love with the community of students, parents, staff and teachers.  Their close relationship with nature, the eco-wellness of our world, and their deep support of the arts intertwined with a balanced education once again jump started my passion for teaching and made my decision to want to join this team an easy choice.

When I’m not teaching, I’m running after my 6 year old, discovering more of Austin with my husband of nearly 10 years, playing with our many, many rescued dogs, cats, turtles, and anything else that is need of rescue, and weightlifting at the gym.
