Arts & Movement Enrichment Classes

ADS' Arts & Movement Wednesday Enrichment Classes are NOW OPEN for enrollment! All you need to know about these classes can be found on the first page of the Arts & Movement Wednesday Enrollment Form Fall 2017.

Want to secure a spot for your child? First come, first served - Early Owl enrollment is the way to go. Not ready to commit to the Early Owl classes ($12) quite yet? Whatever great classes that aren't filled will be available during our Regular Enrollment for just $3/more a day($15)*.

Arts & Movement Enrichment Instructions:

Early Owl Enrollment

  1. Become an Early Owl ($12 Classes*): Fill out the "Arts & Movement Wednesday Enrollment Form Fall 2017." Remember the Early Owl gets the class they want AND reduced prices (until June 1st)! First come, first served enrollment.
  2. All Early Owls: Look for an e-mailed invoice from Brightwheel for the Enrichment Deposit by June 8th.
  3. All Early Owls: Pay your first invoice for the deposit by June 15th. (Cash, check, PayPal or bank transfers through Brightwheel)
  4. All Early Owls: Pay your second invoice for the remaining balance by August 21st
  5. All Early Owls: Ask your student about their great first Arts & Movement Enrichment on Wednesday, August 23rd when you pick them up!
Regular Enrollment
  1. Regular Registration ($15 Classes*): Fill out the "Arts & Movement Wednesday Enrollment Form Fall 2017." First come, first served enrollment. August 25th deadline to register.
  2. Regular Registration: Look for an e-mailed invoice from Brightwheel for your Enrichment Class after August 10th.
  3. Regular Enrollment: Pay your full invoice by August 21st. (Cash, check, PayPal or bank transfers through Brightwheel)
  4. Regular Enrollment: Ask your student about their great first Arts & Movement Enrichment on Wednesday, August 23rd when you pick them up!

CLASSES OFFERED IN FALL 2017:
Artist Lab (Taught by Creative Action)
 
Class Length: 90 minutes (2:15pm-3:45pm)

Students explore themes like world cultures, community service, and creative problem-solving as they explore artists who changed the world and develop their own STEAM skills through design, building, and working with a variety of art techniques and tools.

Capoeira (Taught by Capoeira Luanda)
 
Class Length: 60 minutes (2:15pm-3:15pm)

Capoeira is an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, acrobatics and music that is known for its uniquely playful energetic appearance. It is a great way for children to build confidence, stay physically active and develop respect for each other in a fun and safe environment. One hour classes will include: Warm-up and stretching exercises, Capoeira movements, Acrobatics, Music and Portuguese Phrases.

Choir (Taught by Austin Children's Choir)
 
Class Length: 60 minutes (2:15pm-3:15pm)

RESTRICTED: Grades 3-8 Only

 

Austin Children's Choir develops fresh voices, fosters a life-long love of music, encourages children to follow their passions and motivates them to set and achieve their goals. The result is a group of exceptional young people who come together to delight audiences with a musical repertoire drawing from various time periods and worldwide destinations.

Dance (Taught by Go Dance)
 
Class Length: 45 minutes (2:15pm-3pm)

Get ready to move with Go Dance! Ballroom and Social Dancing develops skills for youth to become healthy, happy, and successful adults on and off the dance floor. Through dance, children and teens learn: social skills, communication, physical coordination, cooperation, personal responsibility, not to mention it's a blast! Throughout the semester, students will work with a highly trained Go Dance instructor to learn the basics of various social dance genres from Latin Dances, Two-Step, Ballroom and Swing!

Digital Media & Filmmaking (Taught by Creative Action)
 
Class Length: 90 minutes (2:15pm-3:45pm)

RESTRICTED: Grades 4-8 Only

 

Students explore themes like empathy, leadership, and problem-solving as they work from concept to screen to bring their imaginations to life. Projects often include original movies, music videos, animations or other digital media creations.

Maker Workshop (Taught by Tinkering School)
 
Class Length: 60 minutes (2:15pm-3:15pm)

If you have a curious kid with an adventurous spirit who lives to make stuff, this is the enrichment class you’ve been looking for. In each class we will introduce a theme (‘Shelter’, ‘Toys and Games’, ‘Energy’) and learn skills, and work on projects which relate to the theme.

Soccer (Taught by Soccer Shots)
 
Class Length: 60 minutes (2:15pm-3:15pm)

RESTRICTED: Grades K-2 & 3-5 Only

 

Soccer Shots has been positively impacting children in the Austin and San Antonio areas for almost ten years. We have strong partnerships with over 150 preschools and daycares throughout Central Texas. We also maintain partnerships with the City of Austin, the City of Lakeway, the City of Round Rock, and many other communities, HOA’s and school districts. Soccer Shots - The Children's Soccer Experience - is a high energy, developmentally appropriate and FUN introduction to the world’s greatest game with a focus on skill, confidence and character building over competition. A leader in youth soccer development, our expert-approved curriculum is age-appropriate and officially aligned with Texas Early Learning Standards. As the premier Children’s Soccer Experience, our mission is simple and clear – we aim to positively impact children’s lives.

 

Materials Needed: Comfortable clothes, comfortable shoes (tennis shoes work fine), access to water (personal water bottle).

Theatre Adventures (Taught by Creative Action)
 
Class Length: 90 minutes (2:15pm-3:45pm)

Students explore themes like friendship, emotional management, and personal similarities and differences through storybooks, dramatic games, acting, costumes, puppetry and prop-making.

Ukulele (Taught by Groundwork Music)
 
Class Length: 60 minutes (2:15pm-3:15pm)

Groundwork Music Project will providing ukulele lessons at Austin Discovery school that broaden a child’s musical skill set across a wide spectrum of singing and playing. Ukulele is a great instrument for learning to play melodies, strum chords, develop singing skills and more. This is a great program for students who are looking toward the ukulele choir in older grades, and for those who want to broaden their skills in general. Arrangements are created so that students can play a variety of parts suited to their skill level. Singer/song writer and composer, Neal Kassanoff, provides much of the content used in the program, and students have opportunities to perform in high profile events(alongside professional musicians) throughout the year. Mr. Kassanoff has written music for film soundtracks, and for artists like Guy Forsyth and Carolyn Wonderland, as well as co-writes with Ben Kweller.

 

Materials Needed: Ukulele. If you need one, you can get one through Groundwork on the first day. Ukuleles are available for $42 plus tax. This cost is not included in the cost of the class.

 

 

3 GLOBAL STEAM CLASSES:

 

STEAM CLASSES are taught in a GLOBAL Classroom with a Partner School in a developing country. Students will share in video messages with their global partner school each week. Class curriculum and materials being provided by Level Up Village. These classes are done by SPECIFIC AGE GROUP.

 

MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 20 STUDENTS FOR EACH OF THE CLASSES BELOW TO MAKE.

 

**PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS MUST SIGN UP FOR BOTH 8 WEEK SESSIONS TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE STEAM CLASSES. A STUDENT MAY NOT REGISTER FOR JUST THE 1ST 8 WEEK SESSION OR THE 2ND 8 WEEK SESSION. IT IS REQUIRED TO DO BOTH SESSIONS TO PARTICIPATE IN THESE CLASSES.

GLOBAL STORYBOOK ENGINEERS
 
Class Length: 90 minutes (2:15pm-3:45pm)

RESTRICTED: Grades K-2 Only

 

An innovative exploration of engineering for our youngest students through the lens of folk tales, stories and myths from different cultures while exploring how they can "rescue" their storybook heroes by building spaghetti towers (using materials such as noodles and marshmallows), boats, BrushBots and more!

GLOBAL VIDEO GAME DESIGN & GLOBAL WEB DESIGN
 
Class Length: 90 minutes (2:15pm-3:45pm)

RESTRICTED: Grades 3-5 Only

 

1st 8 weeks: Video Game Design: Don't just play the game, MAKE the game! In this course, students will create games and even remix what others have done! By learning "Scratch" (designed by the brilliant folks at MIT) they’ll get to impress parents and friends with their cool creations. They’ll co-design a video game with their Global Partner and also learn about each other’s culture through the exchange of video messages. Ok, it's screen time. but students will be learning math, logic, coding and presentation skills, too!!

 

2nd 8 weeks: Web Design: Students team up with a global partner from another country to design and create a website focused on solutions to global climate change. They practice coding languages such HTML, CSS and JavaScript, as well as tools including Weebly and Dash.

GLOBAL VIDEO GAME DESIGN & GLOBAL WEB DESIGN
 
Class Length: 90 minutes (2:15pm-3:45pm)
RESTRICTED: Grades 6-8 Only
1st 8 weeks: Video Game Design: Designed for middle school, this course teaches students to code video games, create animations and remix what others have done. They will use the engineering design process as they collaborate with a global partner student and their classmates to solve a design challenge. Students use a programming language called “Scratch” to learn a variety of coding and programming skills, culminating in a co-designed video game: a global theme park game that incorporates elements of each culture!
